I'm obvious that anything who has bought shoes online has had this problem. The easy fact is that dissimilar shoes fit differently; not even all Marc Jacobs brand shoes fit the same way, let alone all boots or all ballet flats from dissimilar brands. But buying shoes online does not have to be a 50/50 game of chance anymore. Here are some great ways tip the scale in your favor:

1. When you see a pair of shoes online that you love, first check your closet to see if you have any shoes by that brand already. Fit may vary by style but it's more likely that it won't, so it's all the time a good idea to take note of the sizes you've been wearing in that brand. If you've never bought a shoe from that brand before, you may want to stop at a department store to try on one or two styles to get an idea about how their shoes work on your feet.
2. Many websites allow customers to write reviews on shoes they have purchased from them and there are other websites devoted entirely to reviews. Even if you have 20 pairs of shoes by a specific brand all in the same size, you may still want to check reviews to see if that one style fits a miniature small or big just as a fluke by the brand. If you're not sure how to find a review, quest on an internet browser like Google or Yahoo for the brand name, style name and the word "review" or "reviews". It should look something like this: "Steve Madden Michell review".
3. You may also want to try researching the brand of the shoes you're concerned in to see how they list their sizes on the shoes themselves, either they are in Us sizes (like 8, 8.5) or Euro sizes (like 39, 40) or some other size like German or Japanese. Commonly a brand will not change their sizing in the middle of styles (i.e. All Nine West shoes have the Us size printed on the sole). This will help you especially when buying European shoes as some websites will only show you the converted Us size (if you are a Us shopper) which can be incorrect. all the time ask what size is printed on the shoes themselves and base your fit off that size (see my warning #1 about size conversions below).
Warnings
1. Look at the available sizes a pair of shoes is listed in (Us, Euro, Uk, Aus, etc). If the shoes are shipping to a country other than where the sizing originated from, chances are the website will contribute you with a size conversion chart. You can also find these charts online. However, I do Not propose using any size conversion chart other than one in case, granted by the specific brand you are purchasing from. For instance, I propose only using an Ugg size conversion chart if you are finding to buy Ugg boots. Just a quick comparison of size charts online will tell you why, there are way too many differences. And since sizes vary by brand anyway, even a unquestionably good size chart will be wrong for some brands. If you cannot find a size conversion chart online for the specific brand you are concerned in, try calling up one of their shop or emailing the brand website to ask about the fit or conversions.
2. It is generally a myth that people should buy a size larger than they Commonly would for boots or for shoes with extremely pointed toes. Most brands know that women's feet are not shaped like triangles and accommodate the sizing based on where a general foot would end in the toe-box. However, you may want to keep these thoughts in mind:
a. Most people wear boots in the winter when it's cold out. So if you are unquestionably not sure about what size to get, it is Commonly great to opt for the larger size because you can all the time wear thicker socks if the boots are too big (it'll be warmer anyway). There's pretty much nothing you can do if a boot fits too small except suffer.
b. The taller a high heel is, the more your foot will want to squish forward throughout the day. If you are finding at open toe shoes, your feet are more likely to be able to slide forward adequate to make the heel or heel strap of a shoe flop off (there's no toe box to stop them). So if you sometimes fit a half size larger or smaller, you may want to opt for the smaller size in those 4 inch open toe heels.
I hope these tips help you in your online shoe quest! But remember that even with the best preparation, sometimes a pair of shoes just won't feel comfortable since most every foot is unique to its owner. So all the time find the return course of any website you're buying from before placing your order.
